Thunderstorms to hit after heatwave
Lightning show to usher in more varied weather
Courier Country could be hit by thunderstorms as the heatwave comes to a spectacular end later this week.
The Met Office is predicting an end to the soaring temperatures that have baked the region since last Friday.
The lightning show will usher in a more varied weather pattern through into next week.
A spokeswoman said: “Monday is the last day of you seeing temperatures in the 20s, with 23 or 24C being the C maximum.
“On Tuesday the weather front that’s moving through right now will bring a bit more cloud than in recent days and behind that is turns a bit cooler and fresher. The temperature may hit 20C as an absolute maximum. It will be mostly dry, with a bit of cloud around.
“As we move through to midweek there is a chance of seeing some heavy, possibly thundery, downpours coming through. They will arrive in eastern Scotland first thing on Wednesday morning – 6 or 7am.
“There will be bursts of rain on and off through much of the day but some places may avoid that completely.
“That will continue through the night into Thursday before clearing away. After that it will be a much more up and down picture, with rain coming through at times on Thursday into Friday. The weekend will be breezy and showery.”
The bad news comes as it was revealed that parts of the UK had a hotter overnight temperature on Sunday than daytime Istanbul.
The mercury hit 24C (75F) at midnight at London City Airport – hotter than Istanbul where day temperatures did not climb higher than 21C (70F) on Sunday.
While Scotland will see showers, England will continue to bask in sunshine for the rest of the week.
MeteoGroup forecaster Callum Stewart said: “We can expect more warm and humid nights this week as the very warm weather will remain until Friday.”
High pressure to the south of Britain will continue to drag hot air up from the tropics over the coming days.
