Murdoch pens two-year deal – and eyes the right-back slot
Stewart Murdoch wants to be known as a right-back after extending his Dundee United deal for a further two years.
Murdoch, 27, joined the Tangerines a year ago from Ross County as a midfielder and kicked off in the centre of the park alongside Willo Flood.
Towards the end of the campaign, though, Murdoch transformed himself into the Tannadice team’s first-choice right-back.
He enjoyed it so much that he asked for a meeting with manager Ray McKinnon to tell him that it was now his preferred position.
Murdoch said: “I am delighted to finally get everything signed. It had been discussed for a few weeks and now I can just look ahead to next season.
“I have enjoyed my first year here and we are going to be having a good crack at promotion next season again.
“The club have made some good moves already this summer, bringing in players from a level above the Championship.
“That shows we mean business and if we can keep this up then we will have a right good chance. The manager has shown a lot of faith in me and now I need to repay him after giving me a two-year deal.
“He moved me to right-back and I think that made it even more likely that I would be signing a new contract. I feel that is my position now and I made a point of telling the manager that I see myself as a right-back.”
McKinnon spoke of his delight at keeping Murdoch at Tannadice.
The United boss said: “When I brought Stewart to the club last season, I described him as the right type and someone who is strong in the tackle.
“He has also shown his adaptability with his move to right-back.
“This season it will be important that every member of the squad can make an impact every time I call on them and I know with Stewart that is the case.”
