DOYLE HEADS FIELD Kinross athlete Eilidh Doyle won her heat of the 400m hurdles to qualify for the final at the European Nations Cup in Lille, France,

Doyle led around the final bend and opened up a 10-metre advantage to the finish line reached in a season’s best of 55.76 seconds to head the list of qualifiers. It was a morale-boosting performanc­e following her ninth place at the Rome Diamond League earlier this month.

Jack Green ensured the GB team had another 400m hurdles finalist, winning his heat in 49.96, fastest of the qualifiers.

Fastest 100m qualifier Harry Aikines-Aryeetey won his heat in 10.33.

Corinne Humphreys made her internatio­nal debut qualifying for the women’s 100m final in 11.53, behind France’s Carol Zahi 11.34.

Dwayne Cowan, also making his GB debut, at 32, won the opening 400m men’s heat in 46.04. Davide Re (Italy) posted the fastest time in heat 2 (45.85).

Favourite Olha Zemlyak (Ukraine) eased her way to a winning 51.70 in the women’s 400m.

Fastest loser Mary Iheke claimed a place in the final, finishing fifth in her second heat clocking a season’s best 52.92.

Alicia Barrett, who tops the European U20 rankings, justified her place in the GB team by finishing third in her 100m hurdles heat in 13.32 and booking a place in the final.

The 2015 European U23 champion David Omoregie pulled off a surprise win in the opening 110m hurdles heat, posting a season’s best of 13.34 and beating Rio silver medallist Orlando Ortega (Spain).

Sam Miller continued the GB athletes’ progressio­n to the finals, taking third in the 200m in 20.88.

Finette Agyapong’s 23.31 for fourth just made the final as the fifthfaste­st qualifier. FINE START FOR SCOTS Scotland made the perfect start to the European Women’s Volleyball Championsh­ip Small Countries Division finals in Luxembourg, beating Iceland 25-21 25-19 20-25 25-22.

Mhairi Agnew was top Scottish scorer with 14 points, with Thelma Gretarsdot­tir leading the scoring with 19 points for Iceland.

The Scots face Luxembourg and favourites Cyprus today before finishing off against the Faroe Islands tomorrow.
