Special ‘swap shop’ help event

-

A special anti-poverty event is taking place this week.

A “swap shop”, with information on benefits and opportunities to develop skills and learning, will form the basis of a pilot hoping to help people cope better with the impact of austerity.

The first of two events will run from 11am to 3pm on Thursday at the Beehive in College Street.

The second event will take place toward the end of September.

The events have been organised as part of a funding package from the Resilience And Community Capacity Building Funds Scheme.

Included in the day will be a swap shop, where the public can swap things they no longer need, for things they do.

Information will be available on a range of issues, from benefit entitlement to housing.

There will also be opportunities when it comes to work, training and volunteering.

Bruce Henderson of community group Clear Buckhaven said: “This is potentially a really important event for people who may not be getting their full entitlement, have some challenges or who simply have things they no longer need but could swap for something they do.

“There will be people who will benefit from all three strands and that is excellent.”
