Edinburgh’s art travels across Forth for Fife exhibition
Following on the success of the Glasgow Boys exhibition last year, St Andrews Museum is looking over the Forth for its latest show.
The museum is showcasing an exhibition of paintings until November by the group of 20th Century artists known as the Edinburgh School.
All the paintings come from the fine art collection cared for by Fife Cultural Trust on behalf of Fife Council.
Exhibitions Curator Janice Crane said: “There are more than 40 Edinburgh School paintings in our collection.
“A Brush with Colour offers visitors the chance to see many of them brought together for the first time in one venue, including a newly donated watercolour by William Gillies.”
The original group of artists studied at the Edinburgh College of Art during or shortly after the First World War.
Often referred to as forward-looking traditionalists, their work was characterised by their handling of paint and by their use of colour.
Another group of influential young painters emerged from the college in the 1950s.
This new generation shared their predecessors’ conscious traditionalism and were also influenced by their individuality of approach.
The exhibition features works by leading members of both generations, including Anne Redpath and Elizabeth Blackadder.
