Former Dundee star Stewart pens season-long loan deal with Dons

ABERDEEN: Former Dundee striker to become third new summer arrival at Pittodrie

- Ross alexander

Aberdeen will complete the signing of Birmingham City forward Greg Stewart on a season-long loan today.

The 27-year-old moved to St Andrew’s from Dundee in a £500,000 move last summer, but started only six games in the English Championship last season and is not wanted by new Blues manager Harry Redknapp.

Stewart will undergo a medical in Aberdeen this morning and, providing there are no problems, will be unveiled as a Dons player.

Hearts, Hibernian, Motherwell and Dundee were among the clubs keen to bring Stewart back to Scotland but the Dons always appeared the most likely destination for the forward, who netted 32 goals in 84 appearances at Dens Park.

Stewart will become Aberdeen’s third summer signing following the arrival of Greg Tansey from Caley Thistle and the return of Ryan Christie on loan from Celtic.

The Dons are also closing in on a move for highly-rated Stranraer midfielder Kyle Turner.

The 19-year-old was on trial in February and is expected to become part of Paul Sheerin’s under-20 Dons squad.

Aberdeen goalkeeper Joe Lewis has also pledged his future to the club by signing a two-year extension that will keep him at Pittodrie until 2020.

The 29-year-old was named in the SPFL’s team of the season after an excellent first campaign at Pittodrie.

McInnes is delighted the Englishman will be at the club for the next three years.

He said: There will be no better news than Joe signing. He absolutely loves it here. He is buying a house in the city and his family are settled here.

“He has been made to feel very welcome by the supporters, probably because he has been doing well which always helps.

“Joe is an integral part of what we want to do here and I’m absolutely delighted he’s staying.”
