100 years ago

There was a large gathering at St Margaret’s, Broughty Ferry, when the closing exhibition took place and the pupils carried out a programme which was thoroughly enjoyed by the large audience. The operetta chosen was “Beauty and the Beast” which lends itself to beautiful staging and dancing and no pains had been spared by the teachers to make the most of these details. The sum raised by a produce sale is to be devoted to the upkeep of the school beds at Royaumont Hospital, France.

50 years ago

Reports of flying saucers over Argentina and Paraguay poured in from varying quarters. All reports agreed UFOs overflew Paraguayan and Argentine territory at about 10pm. The reported number ranged from six to 16. The control tower of Stroessner Airport at Asuncion, Paraguay, reported that its radio and radioteletype equipment was heavily jammed for several minutes while round, brightly-lit objects flew over in a North-South course at an altitude of around 2,500 feet.

Scotland have won a special UEFA fair play award in recognition of the conduct of the fans who travelled to Sweden to support their country at the European Championship Finals. A special commemorative plaque will be presented to SFA president Peter Gardiner by UEFA president Lennart Johansson in Gothenburg prior to the kick-off of the final between Germany and Denmark. He said: “I am delighted that the fans’ excellent behaviour has been acknowledged in this way.”

A post-referendum crisis has engulfed British politics as the fallout from the shock of UK voting to leave the EU sweeps through Westminster and Holyrood. Nicola Sturgeon signalled her intention to block Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union, but politicians and academics clashed over whether such a move would be legal. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn is teetering on the brink of losing his job after half of the shadow cabinet resigned ahead of a probable party coup.
