Tributes to Orkney cliff fall victim from Dundee University friends
Former Dundee student Jamie fell from cliffs while guiding a tour party near Stromness
Tributes have been paid to a former Dundee University student who fell to his death while working as a tour guide in Orkney.
Jamie Shannon, 23, from Dunblane, was leading a tour along Yesnaby Cliffs near Stromness on Monday when he lost his footing and fell to his death.
He had been working as a tour guide for Edinburgh-based company Haggis Adventures.
Jamie, who graduated last year, had worked at Dundee University’s Institute of Sport and Exercise and was a former member of the university’s volleyball club.
A statement posted on its Facebook page said: “As some of you may have found out over the last couple of days, our brother, team-mate and dearest friend Jamie Shannon has sadly passed away.
“Jamie gave all his time, effort and love making sure everyone he met felt special.
“Whether you were lifelong friends or had met him for the very first time, the warmth of Jamie’s heart is something you would feel for the rest of your life.
“For those who had never met him, it is certain that you have heard us talking about how he made us all laugh, or telling many of the great stories we get to carry with us for having him in our lives.
“Never again will there be one like Jamie.”
Relative Dave Steele posted: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to say, that after a tragic accident in Orkney, we have lost our dearest Jamie Shannon.
“Loving brother, dearest son, caring cousin and nephew and much loved grandson. We would like everyone to respect the family’s privacy at this very sad time. Goodnight and God bless Jamie. Love always and missing you dearly.”
Haggis Adventures made arrangements for everyone in the tour group to return to Edinburgh following the accident, which occurred around 2.15pm on Monday.
