Downfield FC to host charity football match in honour of Dundee boxer

A charity football match has been organised to mark the first anniversary of Dundee boxer Mike Towell’s death.

The match will be held at the home of Downfield FC on Sunday October 22.

It will begin at noon, with all donations going towards Mike’s partner, Chloe Ross and a charity of her choice.

The contest will see Iron Mike’s former team, Michelin Athletic, go up against an XI.

Miss Ross said: “I can’t believe its been nine months already since we lost Michael, still doesn’t feel like it’s really happened.

“And we’re already speaking about the one-year memorial match. Crazy. Keep the date free, guys.”

Co-organiser Brendan Scanlan said: “It’s still a couple of months away but it will soon almost be a year we lost Iron Mike, which is heart breaking.

“We’re going to have another charity match at the Downfield clubbie. It’s October 22, the closest we could get it booked to the date.

“Four weeks before we will be going to Soccerworld to get some training, to make sure we lift the cup this year for the champ.”

Downfield FC’s social club previously held a fundraiser to help drive forward 25-year-old Michael’s boxing career.

Miss Ross, along with Mike’s mum Tracey, intends to purchase two scanners for clubs in Dundee and Stirling, two places where the boxer learned to fight.

More than £13,000 has already been raised to go towards the purchase of one scanner in Mike’s name.

Mike died of an intercerebral hemorrhage last September following a bout in Glasgow against Welsh boxer Dale Evans.
