100 years ago

Lloyd George arrived at Dundee West Station by special Caledonian train last night. The Prime Minister is to spend the weekend in the city. He is to receive the freedom of the city today while later in the afternoon he is to be entertaine­d to a banquet. The station was closed to the general public. Lord Provost Don waited the arrival of his distinguis­hed guest and the train arrived punctually to time, steaming into the platform at 20 minutes past 10 o’clock. The Prime Minister looked fit and active.

50 years ago

A bus shelter for Barry, vandalism at Arbirlot and tarmac for Auchmithie were subjects debated by Carnoustie District Council at Arbroath. Barry, it was decided, will have to take its place in the queue for a bus shelter. Concern was expressed at vandalism on two wooden footbridge­s over Elliot burn at Arbirlot. It was felt that the blame lay with an older element from outside the village. A request has been made from Auchmithie for tarmac in the village square at the fountain.

Dundee High School’s retiring head of art, David Macdonald, has commemorat­ed his severing of ties with the school by presenting them with a whole set of new ones. Mr Macdonald, who lives in Carnoustie, has spent 23 years at the school, 16 of them spent as head of the department. The ties are navy blue and bear a design depicting the school pillars surmounted by a saltire and a thistle. They are to be presented to pupils who represent their country in any activity at any level.

Emergency services raced to contain a suspected chemical leak in Glenrothes town centre. At least five fire appliances, four police cars and three ambulances were called to an area in the Postgate after someone reported seeing “blue smoke” rising from a drain near an unoccupied building. Glenrothes Bus Station was evacuated as a precaution and a cordon was set up as witnesses described an overpoweri­ng chemical smell in the area. It is understood no one required medical treatment.
