BRECHIN CITY 2 SPARTANS 0

Brechin’s preparations got off to a winning start with a 2-0 victory over Lowland League Spartans at Glebe Park.

A deflected shot from defender Chris O’Neil gave City the advantage after 24 minutes and a further goal on the hour mark from one of the hosts’ three trialists wrapped up victory.

City boss Darren Dods was pleased with the tough workout the Edinburgh side gave his team and expressed his satisfaction at the end of what was a competitive and hardfought 90 minutes.

“At this early stage of the season the main priority is about getting players fitness levels up to a good standard and this afternoon’s match was a step along the way in achieving that objective,” Dods said.

“We’ve had five really good training sessions prior to today’s match but not everyone has taken part in all five with several players returning from holiday at various times, so the fitness levels of the players are at different stages.

“Having said that, It was good to get a competitive match under our belts and everyone who was available took part at some stage of the 90 minutes.

“All of our new players had a run out and the game also allowed me to run the rule over three trialists who have been training with us.

“With the Betfred Cup starting in a fortnight’s time and the league campaign getting under way barely three weeks later, I’d like to ideally add a further two or three players to our squad before the Championship starts at the beginning of August.”
