Lintrathen Fly Fishers win Scottish team challenge

-

There has been double success this week for Lintrathen anglers, writes our angling correspondent.

Firstly, the Lintrathen Fly Fishers won the Scottish heat of the Sportfish team challenge at Lake of Menteith and then the Lintrathen AC three-man team won the following heat of the Scottish Club Championships on Saturday.

The Sportfish team challenge (formerly the Lexus) saw only five teams competing this year and qualifiers were Lintrathen FF with 46 fish, with Tweed Valley Tanglers second with 37 and Frozen North in third with 31.

Top individual was Lintrathen’s FF Alan Ramshaw with 10 fish and best fish was taken by Kathleen Shephard Team Damsel Nymphs with a magnificient rainbow of 6lb 14ozs.

The Scottish Championships proved to be a hard session for the 13 teams contesting the competition.

On a brighter note a good few quality fish where caught which had to be capped at the 4lb mark.

The top three teams qualifying for the second semi-final on August 25 were Lintrathen AC, Alba Orvis and Tartan Tyers.

The top five anglers going through to the Champion of Champions are Davie Bonnington, Ian Webster, Alex Ewart, Shane Kelly and James Gardner.

The 75th Dundee Novelty Competition was held at MONIKIE last Friday.

The winner, who was presented with the Dundee Novelty Cup which dates back to 1936, was Ed Brown who caught five trout weighing 8lbs. The runner-up – presented with the James D Hardie Memorial Cup – was James Thomson who caught three trout weighing 6lbs 5ozs.

RESCOBIE LOCH is still fishing well heading into the summer months.

Anglers are still catching fish all over the loch even with the weed growth starting to cause problems in some areas of the loch.

Water quality is also good for the time of the year. Fish of the Month winner for June is Ged Burnett with a brown trout of 6lbs 12 oz.

The fish of the month leader for July is J Davies with a rainbow trout of 6lbs 4 oz.

A RLDA bank fishing competition last week saw 27 fish being caught for 65 lbs. The winner was George Gall with four fish for 10 lbs 14 oz.

FORBES OF KINGENNIE has been fishing really well this past week with reasonably settled weather.

The boathouse, as well as the other ponds has cleared well in the past week and the water clarity is now very good with fish seen cruising around all over the pond.

Tactics have varied on the pond from angler to angler but the normal methods of dries, buzzers and pulling lures have been producing most fish.

The Burnside is also very clear now with at least four feet of visibility. This has helped with the smaller flies taking a good number of fish.

Dries have been the best method with the fish looking up most of the time.

The Bankside has seen the least pressure which is surprising as it has had the most fish on the surface and the water is gin clear, while the Woodside has been fishing really well with lots of fish getting caught.
