Pottering about is a job for Griselda

PRODUCER: Enthusiast set up own pottery and now supplies the Queen

-

Griselda Hill decided to set up her own pottery after an ornament she loved cost more than she was willing to pay. She launched Griselda Hill Pottery Ltd and, for more than 30 years, has been producing Wemyss Ware. What does your business do?

I produce and sell Wemyss Ware pottery. I launched the business in 1985 and have been producing the pottery in Ceres ever since. I own the Wemyss Ware’s trademark and my team of painters use a secret technique of painting that has been passed down through generations from the original designer, Karel Nekol. Why did you start in business?

I first became interested in Wemyss Ware when I was little and my grandmother had a Wemyss pig which I loved. When I moved up to Fife I realised it had been made locally and wanted to buy one. However, even back in 1984 Wemyss pigs could cost up to £4,000 so I decided to try to make my own version. My art degree and enthusiasm helped make up for my initial lack of experience. How did you get where you are?

I’ve had to keep my nerve at many stages during the past 30 years as there have been economic ups and downs. I’ve also had to learn about employment and management, but kept going because I enjoy doing what I do. The internet has been of great benefit and I have tried to keep up with digital developments as a way to raise brand awareness. Who has helped you?

I have been helped considerably by Fife Enterprise, which is now Business Gateway Fife. It has helped me acquire relevant expertise and grants that have gone towards the purchase of equipment. My original adviser helped me acquire the Wemyss Ware trademark which has been invaluable. Most recently I’ve received marketing help through Business Gateway Fife’s specialist advisory service. What was your biggest mistake? Not trusting my instinct. Your greatest achievement?

There are two of which I am very proud. The first is that the Queen has bought two large cabbage rose vases from us, to go alongside her original vases in Balmoral Castle. The second is we have pieces of our work on display in the collections of Kirkcaldy Galleries and the Museum of Edinburgh. Hopes for the future?

I would like to increase awareness of our pottery and develop our reputation further so we are better known worldwide. Do you want to recruit? Yes, it’s definitely on my mind. What is the hardest thing about running your own business?

Being where the buck stops. Any advice to aspiring entrepreneurs?

If you start with a good idea and have sticking power, you can achieve anything.
