Sedges and hoppers to the fore at Monikie reservoirs

-

MONIKIE reservoirs have seen some great sport recently, writes our angling correspondent.

The fish in general were not very deep down, as could be seen with the large numbers rising when the ponds went flat calm.

A sink/midge tip line tended to be all that was required.

Sedges and hoppers continue to account for a lot of the fish caught.

However, as the fish start to feed on the large shoals of fry, lures such as the yellow dancer, dawson’s olive and black and green gold-heads are starting to entice a fair number of fish.

The single angler who ventured out on Crombie this week reported masses of smaller trout feeding on the surface, with the larger fish just coming on to the feed as he left.

Noted catches include St Serfs Ladies with one boat on the Island pond returning seven fish; Dundee AC with six boats on the Island pond keeping 36 for 67lbs; Ferry Fly Dressers with seven boats on the Island pond keeping 17 for 32lbs 03oz; Jim Stewart on the Island pond who kept five for 9lbs 8oz and Frank Chalmers on the Island pond who kept five for 9lbs 2oz.

CARLOGIE DAM. Recent catches at Carlogie Dam have been excellent and mainly on buzzers and dries.

Water levels are good and lots of fish can be seen freely moving on the surface in particular in the evenings.

Some of the best catches include G Patterson (Haddington) who caught and kept three rainbows for 10lb, H Connell (Inverbervie) c/r three, R Clark (Carnoustie) c/r five, M Satchell (Monifieth) c/r 11, S McAllan (Arbroath) c/r seven, A.Stewart (Dundee) c/r 11, I Hutchison (Arbroath) c/r four, S Mutch (Arbroath) c/r 12, B McCally (Forfar) c/r 13, J Thomson (Dundee) c/r seven, L Johnston (Brechin) c/r seven, W Clark (Forfar) c/r 4, G Woods (Montrose) c/r six, J Stuart (Wellbank) c/r four, G Mills (Kirriemuir) c/r six, I.Middleton (Arbroath) c/r four and J Reid (Kingsmuir) c/r four.
