100 years ago

The passenger steamer Kotlin and a flotilla of tugs brought several thousand Kronstadt sailors, soldiers, workmen and work women to Petrograd. AntiGovern­ment banners carried by the sailors included a banner of the Kronstadt Anarchist Club which bore the device – “Down with authority; long live the commune.” Provocativ­e firing was started followed by random machine gun fire and rifle fire. In the general panic which set in, the number of casualties could not be ascertaine­d.

50 years ago

The fracture of a 21-inch water main brought a water shortage warning to rural areas in east Angus. All day workers sought to locate the burst and repair it. Late last night Mr Ritchie Spence, water distributi­on engineer for the Angus Water Department, said that the situation should be back to normal this morning. “The burst was a in a main serving East Angus,” he said. “Fortunatel­y, small villages such as Edzell have service tanks and hotels were asked to conserve supplies.”

Dundee FC have suffered yet another boardroom departure. It has emerged that Ron Hutcheson, replaced as vice-chairman by Malcolm Reid on June 26, is no longer a director of the club. He is, however, still involved in planning the Dark Blues’ centenary celebratio­ns and serving on their advisory committee. Hutcheson is the seventh board member to depart Dens since last September. Meanwhile, DFC stewards are asked to attend a meeting at Dens next Wednesday.

Scotland’s shadow finance secretary has denounced a flood defence package for Perth and Kinross as unfair. First Minister Nicola Sturgeon revealed that £962,000 of the millions of pounds being handed out would go to the district, blighted by flooding in recent years. Around 80% of that is expected to go towards a largescale project in Milnathort. Murdo Fraser said: “As one of the worst areas to be hit, you would have thought the Scottish Government would have recognised this.”
