Internet supply cut off after car crashes into telecoms box
Police investigating crash that left Dens Park area with connection problems
A car ploughed into a telephone exchange box outside Dens Park in Dundee yesterday morning, causing chaos to the local internet supply.
Dundee FC were unable to process card payments at the club shop after the vehicle, a red Ford, knocked out their internet supply at around 3am.
The exchange unit was taken out at the corner of Provost Road and Sandeman Street, compromising the club’s internet connectivity.
Residents witnessed five people – two males and three females – in the car when it careered into the communications box.
Police have confirmed a 22-year-old man has been arrested in connection with the crash.
One resident described waking up at the sound of an “almighty bang” and shouts of “run, run”.
All five apparently scarpered before police arrived at the scene, after which officers with dogs began scouring Sandeman Street.
Local woman Jackie Bridge said: “It was at about 3am. I had been sleeping and I heard an almighty bang, and just saw the red car. I didn’t see how it got to where it was. There were five people in it, they just got out and ran.
“One of the guys went down (Provost Road), he was just going ‘run, run’.
“There were three girls and two boys, there was a police dog and a dog handler. The police went in the first close and went along. For about another hour it was cordoned off.”
Another woman said she woke up to find police with dogs entering her building on Sandeman Street.
A spokesperson for Openreach said: “Following a road traffic accident in the Fairmuir area of Dundee, damage was caused to an Openreach street cabinet.
“Our engineers are currently replacing the cabinet and will repair the cable as soon as possible.”
