William Low, of Blebo, presided at a meeting of the Fife and Kinross Secondary Education committee when a discussion took place on the best means of expending the £10,000 grant given to increase the income of the Secondary Education Committee. The grant was quite apart from the £400,000 intended to improve the status of the teachers. A suggestion was using some for medical inspection.

50 years ago

Just over £1,000 was raised at the Caledonian Market, organised by the Arbroath branch, Ladies Lifeboat Guild in the Drill Hall, Marketgate. The market, in aid of lifeboat funds, was opened by Commander Broelinow, HMS Condor. He emphasised the constant drain on funds and the importance of maintainin­g the lifeboat serviceand thanked the branch for their efforts.

A woman, who was attacked and robbed in Balgay Cemetery, Dundee, has said she will never be able to return to the graveyard. Dundee-born Mrs Ann Martin Wright (83), on holiday from Michigan with son Frank and his wife Mary, was searching for her husband Francis’s grave when she was set upon by a young thief in broad daylight. “My feelings are shattered,” she said.

A legal challenge by nature lovers has put investment in local windfarms in jeopardy. Plans for the Inch Cape, Neart na Gaoithe and Seagreen offshore arrays have been dealt a blow after the Court of Session ordered a review of planning consents. RSPB Scotland had called for permission­s to be set aside over fears seabirds could be killed by turbine blades.
