Tributes pour in for popular Kirkcaldy lollipop man
Community: Planstoerecta plaque in memory of 74-year-old said to be ‘a great asset to Capshard’
Popular lollipop man Alastair Robertson has died after a short illness.
The 74-year-old was well-known in Kirkcaldy’s Dunnikier Estate due to a decade of helping youngsters from Capshard Primary cross the road.
Before that, he worked as a crossing patrol officer at St Andrew’s High School.
Described as popular and well-loved, Mr Robertson was said to be a great asset to Capshard.
His wife Patricia and four children, Ally, Gillian, Lindsey and Graeme, said they had been touched and overwhelmed by kind wishes from the school community as people learned of his death.
Mr Robertson also had five grandchildren.
Plans have now been launched by the group Friends of Capshard to erect a plaque in his memory and the group’s Facebook page has been inundated with hundreds of tributes from parents and former pupils.
Mr Robertson was also well-known in running and cycling circles in Fife.
He took up running in the mid-1980s and was a member of Fife AC.
A member of Central Fife Sports Council, he served as treasurer there for almost 12 years.
Mr Robertson was a former pupil of Kirkcaldy High School and, on leaving, started work with the TSB before becoming an insurance clerk with Scottish Widows in Edinburgh.
He became a school crossing patrol officer in the mid-1990s.
Jeff Jacobs, service manager with Fife Council, said: “He was a popular and well-loved school crossing patrol officer who had been in post since January 1997.
“He will be missed by many children whom he has helped over the years.”
Mr Robertson’s funeral will be held at Kirkcaldy Crematorium on Friday at 10.15am.
