Developer presses on with application
A developer still hopes to build a care home where Cupar Police Station once stood, despite being blocked by councillors.
Balmoral Construction has appealed to the Scottish Government for planning permission for a 72-bed home on Carslogie Road.
Its plans for a modern twostorey building were rejected earlier this year by Fife Council’s north-east planning committee, as members feared it would overshadow nearby homes to an unacceptable extent.
Councillors also decided it would be an overdevelopment of the site.
Balmoral Construction argued the increase in overshadowing compared with the double and single-storey police station would be insignificant.
It also claimed the home, which would have on site healthcare and leisure facilities including a bowling green, would help meet significant local demand for care home bed spaces.
Consultant Derek Scott said: “The proposal, which represents a £5 million investment in the town, will create in the region of 30 to 40 new employment opportunities with additional economic spinoff benefits to the construction industry and other businesses in the area.”
The firm also pointed out council officers had recommended granting consent and claimed councillors had refused on “entirely unsound” grounds.
The station closed in 2013 after officers moved to the County Buildings.
