Winter steps up to confirm her class

-

Winter confirmed she is a filly of the highest quality when taking the step up to 10 furlongs in her stride to win the Qatar Nassau Stakes at Goodwood.

The Aidan O’Brien-trained three-year-old more than earned her stripes with three successive victories over a mile at Group One level – the English and the Irish 1,000 Guineas and the Coronation Stakes.

She had to overcome the next step by moving up to a mile and a quarter, but did so in style on the testing ground.

Ryan Moore had the 10-11 favourite just behind the pace set by Sobetsu, before sending her on to win her race, which she did by a length and a half from Blond Me, who pinched second spot.

Barraquero (4-1) gave Brian Meehan a third Qatar Richmond Stakes when carrying the Sangster colours to victory.

William Buick was completing a double having earlier struck on Endless Time (5-2 favourite) in the Markel Insurance Lillie Langtry Stakes.

The Charlie Appleby-trained mare had plenty to do a furlong out, but her class shone through as she flew home to beat Dubka by a neck.

Good Omen (8-1) outstayed his rivals in the Matchbook Betting Exchange Handicap, coming home by a length and a quarter in the hands of Jamie Spencer from the Queen’s Frontispiece.

Roulette (evens favourite) gave trainer Michael Bell and owner Bill Gredley compensation for Big Orange’s brave run in defeat in the Goodwood Cup on Tuesday by opening her account in the Victoria Racing Club EBF British Stallion Studs Maiden Fillies’ Stakes.

Meanwhile, Sean Levey overcame trouble in running on Richard Hannon’s Billesdon Brook (100-30 favourite) to grab victory late on in the Telegraph Nursery Handicap.

John Gallagher’s Quench Dolly (100-30 favourite) came fast and late to claim the Tatler Handicap under 5lb claimer George Buckell.
