Uefa restrictions rule out trialists

-

Calls for trialists to be involved in the Betfred Cup next season are likely to fall on deaf ears as the SPFL do not wish to fall foul of European governing body Uefa.

Dumbarton manager Stephen Aitken and Cowdenbeath counterpart Billy Brown have been among the managers leading calls for trialists to be available to help part-time clubs cope with the demanding schedule of the competition.

However, Stranraer chairman Iain Dougan, who was recently elected on to the SPFL board, has confirmed that it cannot happen.

Dougan said: “I am aware of the issue over trialists being aired and can understand why it has been as squads are stretched due to holidays and re-signing of players.

“I have sympathy for it and sympathy for out of work players, who could benefit from having a platform. However, allowing them to play would breach Uefa rules.

“When the competition was rejigged last summer, top flight sides were included and Uefa do not allow them to use trialists in any capacity for games that are deemed first team matches.”

“You cannot have different rules for teams in the same competition.

“Trialists were previously allowed in the Challenge Cup at the start of a season but that competition did not include clubs from the Premiership.”

Dougan added: “The SPFL cannot give an exemption for the Betfred Cup without being at odds with Uefa.”
