100 years ago

At a meeting of the Executive Board of the Fife, Kinross and Clackmanna­nshire Miners’ Associatio­n, William Adamson MP, the general secretary, submitted a report with regard to a visit he had made to French coal mines where it was proposed to employ temporary men from the British coalfields. He pointed out that the working conditions were satisfacto­ry, but added that the questions of wages and housing accommodat­ion would require to be arranged.

50 years ago

The last month was such an enjoyable one for the 250 American high school teenagers studying at Dundee that many were in tears yesterday when they left by coach for the Midlands, London and Paris. They were full of enthusiasm for the summer school, whose dean was Alex. G. Robertson, director of extra-mural studies at Dundee University. During their stay they lived in Belmont Hall, to which they presented two indoor rubber plants in pots.

25 years ago

A fighting bull sneaked away from the ring, charged up a staircase and burst on to rooftops in a bid for freedom in Morales, Spain. “We just can’t understand how it got there,” said Angel Blanco, the shocked mayor of the town. The 880lb beast wrecked the staircase, crashed through a window and destroyed the rooftops. The bull’s escape had no happy ending though. It got stuck hanging out of the window, eventually fell through, bounced from one roof to another and plunged into a yard.

One year ago

A number of people in Scotland have been diagnosed as having the zika virus, it has been confirmed. The Scottish Government stressed that the disease, which has sparked a major health alert in South America, “does not pose a public health risk” in Scotland, but said that an undisclose­d number of cases had been found. It is understood that nobody from Courier Country has been affected by the virus. More than 50 people across the UK have been treated for the infection.
