warning no end in sight to scotland’s ‘summer stinker’

weather: Miserable end to school holidays forecast as experts warn ‘woeful’ weather will continue

- Dave lord

Scotland has suffered the worst end-ofschool-holidays weather for 35 years.

Temperatures over the last three weeks have typically peaked at a feeble 19C, markedly down on the same period in previous years, making it the coldest second half of the school holiday period since records began.

It has also been one of the wettest summers on record in Scotland, prompting Weather Outlook forecaster Brian Gaze to say: “Scotland’s had a woeful summer all the way through.

“Statistics show the second half of Scotland’s school holidays were the worst for decades.”

The outlook is every bit as bad, with the nation facing “horror show” back-toschool washouts and 50mph gales in some parts.

“It looks like summer horror weather ahead,” Mr Gaze said.

“Summer has been a stinker in recent weeks – and that is likely to continue.”

The Met Office is predicting rain in most parts today, with showers show on the cards for tomorrow.

Longer spells of rain and windy gusts nudging up to 50mph are likely in the latter part of the week.

Highs will be a miserable 16-17C for most.

Near-freezing temperatures even hit Britain yesterday morning, with lows of 0.5C recorded at Katesbridge, Northern Ireland.

Met Office forecaster Mark Wilson said: “It’s downhill again with Monday seeing rain for most, which could be heavy.

“It’s then a breezy set-up with winds from the west and staying unsettled with showers or long spells of rain through the coming weekend.

“It will also be windy with coastal gales.

“Temperatures will be below average in the rain.”
