Arbroath pay for not getting second goal

AIRDRIEONIANS 1 ARBROATH 1

Bobby Linn says Arbroath’s failure to grab a second goal proved costly but insists a point at Airdrie isn’t a bad result.

The Angus men took the lead at New Broomfield on Saturday through Omar Kader but ex-Forfar Athletic striker Andy Ryan struck just after the interval to earn the Diamonds a share of the spoils.

Arbroath carved out a number of excellent chances to go on and make it two league wins out of two but young Airdrie keeper Rohan Ferguson was in inspired form.

Forward Linn said: “I don’t think we were even close to our best but felt we created enough chances to win the game. The second goal is always vital.

“At 1-0, there is always a chance the opposition will get back into the game and from our attack they have gone up the park and scored.

“He (Ferguson) did well and kept them in the game at times during the second half. You have to give them a lot of credit.

“We could have nicked it towards the end but you would take a point coming through to Airdrie in the second game of the season.”

Arbroath’s busy start to the campaign continues tomorrow night when they travel to Championship Dunfermline Athletic in the first round of the Irn-Bru Cup.

“It feels like we’re already halfway through our season,” said Linn.

“You’ve got games on Tuesday and we’re only able to train one night a week.”

Manager Dick Campbell said: “I’m disappointed with our application and the way in which we went about our jobs.

“Airdrie deserved a point and I’d give the credit to them.”
