Darren Young was delighted to get the new season off and running at the second time of asking.

Young’s men went down 1-0 in the opening week of the season at Stranraer, but made up for it on Saturday with a victory of the same margin of their own.

On-loan St Johnstone forward Greg Hurst did the damage with a second-half strike which Alloa couldn’t counter.

Bayview boss Young was able to take plenty of positives from the 90 minutes.

He said: “It’s great to get that monkey off your back and get the three points and the first win.

“We also got a clean sheet, looked great defensively and when we got the opportunity to go forward we did well.

“The second half we looked good on the ball and forced them to go long.”

The game started at a terrific pace.

Young’s side looked really impressive against an Alloa team which is never too far from the promotion spaces come the end of the season.

East Fife grabbed the initiative when Willis hit the touchline and squared across the goal.

Neil Parry got down well to push the ball back out into the six-yard box but Hurst was waiting to pounce and net his first goal for the Methil men.

The 20-year-old had a chance to make it 2-0 not long afterwards when Parry couldn’t claim a cross and the ball dropped kindly for him eight yards out. But Hurst smashed his effort off the bar.

Alloa couldn’t punish the Fifers, whose defence held out.
