A “significant” sum of money was stolen from a portable cabin in a night-time break-in during the Ricoh Women’s British Open at Kingsbarns Golf Course earlier this month, police have revealed.

The news only came to light yesterday as detectives issued an appeal for witnesses in relation to the theft, confirming that a safe was taken from a hut on site at some point between 8.15pm on Saturday August 5 and 6am on Sunday August 6.

A five-figure sum of cash was said to be inside the safe, and police are now urging anyone who can assist with their investigation to come forward.

Since the safe was taken, officers probing the crime say they have been working closely with staff at the links course to try to identify those responsible and have been pursuing a number of lines of inquiry.

Several thousand people descended on Kingsbarns for the Women’s Open over four days of play, with the theft apparently taking place a few hours after the third day’s play ended.

Detective Inspector Graham Fenton, from North East Fife and Levenmouth CID, said the building was being used in connection with the Women’s British Open tournament and as a result, the safe contained a significant sum of money.

He said: “We are eager to hear from anyone who remembers seeing any suspicious activity around Kingsbarns Golf Course last weekend, or anyone who can assist with our ongoing investigation.

“In particular, we are interested in any information that can help us recover the safe.”

Since 2001, Kingsbarns has co-hosted the European Tour’s Dunhill Links Championship along with the Old Course at St Andrews and Carnoustie – although this year saw it mark its first hosting of a major of any kind with the Women’s Open.

As is the norm these days with large events attracting sizeable crowds, security had been stepped up with bag searches in operation in and around the site.

Anyone with information about what happened can contact Police Scotland via 101 and quote incident number 4744.

Alternatively, an anonymous report can be made to the charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
