Before Sheriff Sym at Perth Jane Clark, barmaid, and Andrew Clark, woodcutter, were charged with a contravent­ion of the Liquor Control Order, in respect that the female accused supplied to Douglas on Saturday August 4th a bottle of whisky in the Albion Bar for off consumptio­n. Douglas was charged with carrying the liquor off. Constable Paterson stated that he saw Douglas entering the Albion Bar. He had nothing in his pockets. When he came out the left side of his jacket was very bulky.

50 years ago

only Italian restaurant is offering lessons on spaghetti eating. To spare the blushes of customers who have not mastered the art of coping with 60-70ft of slithering spaghetti, a special corner was opened yesterday in a newlybuilt restaurant on Bold Street. Manager Franco Bertolassi says the secret is to hold a spoon in the left hand, and the fork in the right, roll up the spaghetti on the fork into a tight ball by pressing it into the hollow of the spoon – and then make a swift transfer to the mouth.

The holiday atmosphere of an Angus sea pleasure trip turned to terror yesterday after a fully-laden craft found itself in danger of foundering among the craggy rocks of the Auchmithie caves. A freak mechanical fault left the Canberra, a former Falklands war lifeboat, rudderless and without power in a narrow channel. With mainly women and children on board, the few men joined the crew in using brushes and other batons to stop the boat from crashing against the rocks.

Britain’s youngest pipe major has made history yet again as the lone piper at the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. Fifer Megan Beveridge, 21, is the first female from the regular army to perform the prestigiou­s role. Not only is Lance Bombardier Beveridge the youngest to have attained the pipe major qualificat­ion, she was also the first woman to successful­ly complete the very exacting course to attain it. The massed pipes and drums fell silent as she played the lament Sleep Deary Sleep.
