The big guns are coming out for a golf day with a difference in St Andrews.

Golfers are being given a shotgun start and military-themed holes at the event at Fairmont St Andrews next Thursday.

It is being held to raise funds in memory of Captain David Seath, who tragically died while running the 2016 London Marathon.

Mr Seath, who was from Crossgates, was running to raise funds for Help for Heroes.

The Captain David Seath Memorial Fund, set up by his family, raises money to provide financial support through Help for Heroes to veterans who experienced physical and psychological trauma.

Since his death, they have raised more than £200,000 and 200 financial grants to veterans have been provided through Help for Heroes.

The Fife man served with distinction with the 19th Regiment Royal Artillery and 29 Commando Regiment Royal Artillery.

During the golfing event two 105mm light guns provided by the Royal Artillery will be positioned on the Kittocks Course and fired to provide a shotgun start. Players and supporters can bid for the privilege of firing one.

Mr Seath’s brother, Gary, is organising the day.

He said: “David had recently taken up the sport and was very keen. Golf is also popular within the military, so it made perfect sense to work with 105 Regiment Royal Artillery to provide a golf day with a difference through a series of militarythemed competition holes and snipers in the rough as well as a 105mm light gun shotgun start.”

There are a limited number of places left available.

Breakfast followed by a clinic with Fairmont professionals will be provided before teams compete for the Captain David Seath Memorial Fund trophy by playing a team stableford on the Kittocks Course.

Following dinner, event host David Tanner of Sky Sports will interview the winning team and competition winners.
