Drivers taken for a ride as fuel costs overinflated
Petrol station holds title of most expensive provider in Scotland
Kinross services has been “named and shamed” as having the most expensive fuel in Scotland.
As drivers take to the roads for the August bank holiday weekend, research by breakdown cover provider Green Flag has revealed Scotland tops the list for the most expensive petrol prices.
Researchers said the prices seem to relate to a lack of competition – the top four have no other petrol station nearby – leaving drivers with little option other than to fill up on overpriced fuel.
Sharing the dubious honour of Scotland’s most expensive fuel provider are Kinross Moto services just off the M90 and Abington services in South Lanarkshire, where the lowest priced fuel is 130.9p.
Next on the list is Happendon services in Lanarkshire, where the lowest available prices are 125.9p, higher than the national average of 116.4p.
Green Flag hopes the data will help people to avoid falling foul of hefty petrol prices.
Lucy Davies, spokesperson at Green Flag, said: “We don’t often get to take time off work, so we want to ensure that everyone is able to enjoy the long weekend to the fullest and not have to shell out for overpriced fuels. Nobody wants to be caught out with costs they weren’t prepared for.
“Green Flag urges drivers to avoid costly fuel prices by researching the roads and ensuring they find the cheapest fuel they can.”
Disgruntled customers took to online review sites to brand the prices at Kinross “daylight robbery”.
“I refused to pay that kind of premium and made a slight detour into Perth (16 milies) and bought for 113.9p,” said one.
Moto said that where the forecourt is owned by them, such as in Kinross, they fix the pump price taking into account the price charged by the fuel company to them, the investment required to acquire and invest in the location and other operational requirements.
