Members of an Angus knitting group who spent hours producing handmade clothes and blankets have handed over several bags of goods to help people in Africa.

The Knitting For Others group was established two years ago by Pauline Suttie who has been supported by a loyal band of volunteers.

They initially knitted for the Raven Trust to help Malawi but their latest effort is being sent to support people in Uganda.

Hugh Henderson, the CEO of Mission International, visited Barry Parish Church to meet the knitting group and collect seven bags full of clothes.

Pauline, who is blind, suffered a stroke last year and is no longer able to knit but she said she was delighted by the support she has received from the Angus community.

She said: “In the past two years the group has knitted big blankets and cot blankets, vests and hats and jumpers and cardigans.

“These sort of things are a lot of help all over Africa and will go to support people affected by flooding and who are in refugee camps.

“It’s been a big community effort. Seven people regularly come to the hall to knit together but in total there are 36 people who have knitted for the project.”

Mr Henderson gave a talk to the group about his recent visit to Uganda.

Mission International has a number of partners in the Eastern Africa country involved in a variety of projects, including a church that supplies education, a primary school and a group which responds to homelessness and destitution in Uganda’s capital Kampala.

Any knitters interested in supporting the effort of the group, which also handed over a £50 cheque, can contact Pauline on 01241 852614.
