Perth waste specialist invests millions

A Perthshire-based recycling and resource management company has made a further multi-million-pound investment in support of its expansion.
Binn Group is ploughing around £2 million into upgrading its fleet of collection vehicles.
The investment comes hard on the heels of a £3m project to develop Scotland’s first Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF) plant.
CEO Allan MacGregor said the waste sector was constantly evolving and the investment was needed to ensure Binn Group’s offering was industry-leading.
“Standing still is not an option to compete in this field,” he said.
“We want to continue to develop and grow and to do that we need to invest in the very latest technology – both in terms of plant for resource handling and recycling and in our fleet of collection vehicles.”
As environmental issues climb up the business and political agenda, Mr MacGregor said the demand for more meaningful data on waste collection and recycling rates had also grown.
As a result, measuring technologies have been fitted to the new vehicle fleet to allow data to be relayed back to the group’s computer systems and customers to be given real-time updates.
The group’s investment has grown the Binn fleet to a total of 50 collection vehicles that operate throughout Tayside, Fife and Stirlingshire.
The firm’s recently commissioned SRF plant operates on a 24-7 basis and produces around 5,000 tonnes of separated, dehydrated, shredded and baled waste each month. The plant helps divert waste from landfill and promotes a more sustainable circular economy.
Mr MacGregor said he was confident the twin investments meant Binn Group was well placed to continue its strong growth journey.
“From a skip hire company launched as an agriculture diversification scheme in 2001, we have grown to be recognised as one of the key players in the industry, employing more than 140 people,” he said.
“That development, coupled with our continuing drive to lead the field in recycling and resource management in Scotland, shows the passion and commitment of everyone involved.”
