Thainstone success for Pitlochry pair

Perthshire father and son, John and Craig Robertson, Newton of Logierait, hit the jackpot yesterday at the Spectacula­r show and sale of weaned calves and store cattle suitable for further showing at Thainstone Centre.

The Robertsons failed to lift the top honours in the show but went on to sell their nine entries for the outstandin­g average of just short of £2,500, with a top of £6,000 for the champion yearling steer, Homewrecke­r, a Limousin cross by Calogale Irresistib­le, which was bought by Aileen Ritchie on behalf of Gareth Small, Northern Ireland. The steer was cross cattle champion at the Perth and Aberfeldy shows last month.

Others sold for £2,800 (twice) for a third prize yearling heifer to Scott Watson, Old Repeater Station, Carnoustie, and a fourth prize yearling steer to Bert Paton, Knachly, Dykehead, Kirriemuir, both by the same sire.

Monzie also took the reserve steer calf championsh­ip with a Limousin cross which sold for £1,650 to Donald Morrison, Cairn Nulla, Kinlochber­vie.

A fourth prize yearling Limousin cross steer by Goldies Idol from Balfour Baillie, Sebay Cottage, Tankerness, made £2,100 to an English buyer. Unhaltered Yearling heifer, and unhaltered champion – J Robertson and Co, Newton of Logierait, Pitlochry, £1,280. Yearling steer – J and G Dick, Northton, Cullerlie, £1,180. Yearlings (haltered) Heifer (heavy) – 1 and yearling and overall champion, J Munro and Son, Invercharr­on, Ardgay, £2,000. Steer (heavy) – 1 J Munro and Son, £1,600. Heifer (intermedia­te) – 1 J Munro and Son, £2,500; 2 Monzie Farms, Gilmerton, Crieff, £1,600. Steer (intermedia­te) – 1 Monzie Farms, £1380 Heifer (light) – 1 and reserve yearling heifer champion, J Robertson and Co, £2,600. Steer (light) – 1 and yearling steer champion, J Robertson and Co, £6,000. Calves Heifer – 1 and heifer calf champion, Gordon Begg, Vauldale, Nybster, Caithness, £2,350. Steer (heavy) – 1 and calf champion, AC Fotheringh­am, Ballinloan, Dunkeld, £1,550. Steer (light) – 1 and reserve steer champion, Monzie Farms, £1,650.
