Win at Annan could take Montrose to the top of League Two

Montrose boss Stewart Petrie is delighted at his side’s start to the season but believes the best is yet to come.

The Gable Endies are five games unbeaten and have taken seven points from nine on offer in League Two.

Three of those were secured last week with a 1-0 home win over Cowdenbeath.

Montrose make the long trip to Annan this afternoon with a win possibly taking them top of the table depending on the result of Peterhead v Stirling.

However, Petrie is wary of an Annan side that won 5-1 against Berwick Rangers last week and “skelped” the Angus side by a similar scoreline when they played in April.

The manager said: “We didn’t play as well as we can in the second half last week, but it was good to get the three points and a clean sheet.

“I am really happy with the way the boys went about things defensively.

“We could have done better going forward but credit to Cowdenbeath, who made it difficult for us.

“I am always looking for better and I feel there is more to come from the boys.

“Sean Dillon took his goal well, and hopefully it will be the first of many for us.

“It was a great delivery from the corner by Martyn Fotheringham. He is showing exactly why we brought him to the club.

“He may be 34 now but he still possesses a great range of passing and ability.

“Unfortunately, he will miss out against Annan this week with a groin strain.

“We have had a good start to the campaign but know we face a really tough test down there.

“They had a fantastic result last week and, when we played them last, they gave us a right skelping. “So we will have to be at our best. “There is a chance that if we win, we could go top. But I don’t read too much into things like that at this stage of the season.

“We will just try to continue picking up points and see where we are at the end of the first quarter.”

As well as Fotheringham, Montrose will be without Michael Bolochoweckyj, Danny Cavanagh, Ryan Ferguson, Terry Masson and Gary Fraser.
