Why Dundee, St Andrews and Abertay universities are awesome
Tam Wilson president of Abertay Student Association Hello, freshers, and welcome to Abertay! And to those who are new to the city, welcome to Dundee!
Four years ago I was in the same position as you – an excited but nervous fresher not knowing what to expect. I have since discovered that university is about much more than attaining a degree, it’s about gaining experience, growing as a person and learning who you really are.
Abertay has a proud history of supporting students from a diverse range of backgrounds and circumstances.
This diversity is one of Abertay’s greatest strengths.
Utilise this wealth of experience that surrounds you as an opportunity to broaden your horizons and know that there is always support there for you.
So welcome to Abertay and enjoy this new chapter in your journey! Five reasons to join us 1 Welcome to your new home! Abertay academics and support staff pride themselves on being part of a welcoming and friendly campus and we use our small size as an advantage to create a family feel for our students. With just 4,000 students in total, freshers quickly get to know who’s who and there’s always a friendly face happy to help.
2 Dundee is an incredible student city, and with the exciting transformation at the waterfront – including V&A Dundee, due to open next year – there’s never been a better time to study here. It seems there’s a new bar or restaurant popping up in the city every week and if sport is more your thing, why not try the new wakeboarding centre at City Quay?
3 We are the Top Modern University in Scotland (Times/Sunday Times 2017), with many of our courses leading the way in student satisfaction. Since 1888, the university has been preparing students for the world of work and more than 92% of our graduates go into employment or further study within six months of graduation.
4 This is a year of celebration! 2017 marks 20 years since Abertay became the first university in the world to offer computer games degrees, and our lucky freshers arrive just in time to join our packed programme of celebrations and events. 5 This year’s freshers will enjoy access to better campus facilities than ever before. From our Centre for Excellence for computer games, to our newly refurbished £3.5m science labs and our cutting edge Collaborative Learning Suite, Abertay boasts resources tailor-made for the millennial generation. Those starting with us this year will also benefit from a major new Library transformation carried out over the summer at a cost of £4m, improving layout, connectivity and service.
