Perthshire firm’s tablet withdrawn from sale

A Perthshire confectioner’s tablet has been recalled over fears it may be contaminated with pieces of metal.

Athole Tablet, based at Meikleour, withdrew two of its products from sale after concerns were raised.

A full product recall of the firm’s Scots Tablet and Iron Broo Tablet was issued following consultation with Food Standards Scotland (FSS).

In a brief statement, the firm apologised to its customers and to retailers but stressed the safety of the remainder of its product lines.

It said certain batch numbers were being recalled due to “a production issue”, but they alone were affected.

FSS issued its own statement revealing the tablet might contain small pieces of metal that could present a safety risk.

“The company has already taken steps to withdraw these products from sale,” a spokesperson said.

Anyone who bought a Scots Tablet 2.268kg jar with a best before date between February 19 and February 24 2018 should return the product immediately.

Similarly, anyone who has bought an Iron Broo Tablet 2.268kg jar with a best before date between February 22 and February 25 2018 should also return it.

FSS added: “If you have bought any of these products do not eat it. Instead, return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund. No other Athole Tablet products are known to be affected”.

Athole Tablet has been asked to ensure point of sale notices are displayed at all retail stores selling its products.

“Those notices will explain to customers why the products are being recalled and what to do if they have bought the products.”

The Perthshire business supplies a range of independent retailers across the UK with its tablets and fudges.

Its website says it manufactures “handmade Scottish tablet” drawing upon “25 years’ experience using traditional recipes and manufacturing methods”.

Athole Tablet did not respond further to requests for comment.
