John Thomson tournament

-

The annual John Thomson primary school football tournament will take place on Sunday at Moorside Park, Dundonald, Cardenden, starting at 12.15pm.

The competition is a seven-a-side football tournament for primary school children in the Cardenden and Kinglassie area and will be kicked off by Provost Jim Leishman.

The tournament is named after Cardenden’s own favourite son and former Celtic goalkeeper, John Thomson, who tragically died as a result of an accidental collision with Rangers player Sam English during an Old Firm match at Ibrox in September 1931.

Organisers expect more than 100 children will take part in Sunday’s event, with refreshments available at Moorside Park.

A parade led by pipers will leave from Moorside Park after the competition for the presentation of trophies, which will take place in the Bowhill Centre at around 3pm.

After the presentation of trophies, wreaths will then be laid at John Thomson’s grave in Bowhill Cemetery, with a lone piper to play the Lament.

Wreaths will also be laid at the monument in memory of the miners who lost their lives in the Bowhill Colliery mining disaster, which occurred just a month after Thomson’s death.

After the wreath laying ceremonies, a social afternoon has also been arranged in the Auld Hoose in Cardenden.
