Dundee Hawkhill Harrier Eilish McColgan sets new Scottish 5,000m record at Brussels Diamond League

-

The final Diamond League champions of the season were crowned in Brussels at the Van Damme Memorial, where Eilish McColgan set a 5,000m Scottish record.

McColgan was eighth in a world-class field in 14:48.49, bettering Laura Muir’s outdoor record 14:52.07 and indoor record 14:49.12 to also go fourth in the UK All-Time rankings.

Eilish now tops the family female rankings ahead of Liz’s 14:59.56 dating back to 1995.

A group of six broke away at the halfway point but world champion Hellen Obiri (Kenya) survived an early fall to whittle that down to two with two laps to go, sprinting around the final bend to clock 14:25.88 ahead of Caroline Kipkirui’s 14:27.55.

Kinross athlete Eilidh Doyle was fifth in the 400m hurdles in 55.04 as Dalilah Muhammad of the US (53.89) shaded Zuzana Hejnova (Czech R).

The fastest women’s 400m of the year came as Shaunae Miller-Uibo (Bahamas) clocked 49.46, chased home by 19-year-old Salwa Eid Naser in a Bahraini record of 49.88.

Elaine Thompson followed up a delayed flight with a finish-line dip to win the 100m in 10.92. Marie-Josée Ta Lou (Ivory Coast) was second in 10.93.

Yohan Blake (Jamaica) won the men’s 100m in 10.02, with James Dasaolu (10.24) sixth and Harry Aikines-Aryeetey (10.27) seventh.

The 200m was a photo finish. Noah Lyles’ 20.00 pipped US colleague Ameer Webb’s 20.01. GB’s Zharnel Hughes (20.27) and Nethaneell Mitchell-Blake (20.33) were sixth and seventh respectively.

The non-league 400m saw Luguelin Santos (Dominica) win in 45.67 ahead of GB 4x400 world medallists Rabah Yousif and Martyn Rooney.

GB long jumper Lorraine Ugen’s 6.65m was only beaten by the 6.70m sixth-round leap of Ivana Spanovic (Serbia).
