Craigie spring shock of round

EAST OF SCOTLAND CUP: Shipbuilders stun Super League Broughty Athletic

- PeTer rundo

East Craigie’s 4-1 win at Broughty Athletic was the shock of the day as the North League side humiliated their topflight hosts.

It was equally as convincing as the scoreline suggests, much to the delight of Shipbuilders co-boss Craig Brown.

He said: “We got our tactics right, defending well and hitting them on the break whenever we could.”

James Malone headed Craigie into a 10th minute lead. A defensive mix-up let Greg McNaughton in for the Fed’s equaliser after half-an-hour.

A great move enabled Aiden Benvie to restore the lead five minutes from the interval and Benvie was on target again, around the hour mark, with Aiden Brown completing the scoring five minutes later.

Another surprise result came at Broxburn where the Super League hosts were ousted by Oakley on penalties.

Broxburn led 3-1 at half-time having come back after Gavin McMillan had put the Fifers ahead.

The South League side roared back and goals from Barry Allen and Derek Murray took it to penalties, which the visitors won 5-4.

A Lee Bryce double enabled Hill of Beath to edge out Arbroath Vics 2-1.

The Super League outfit had to come from behind before subduing a spirited showing by the North League visitors.

Sam Donald gave Vics the lead after 12 minutes, but Bryce levelled on 27 minutes and notched the winner a minute after the restart.

There were no such problems for Lochee United as they clinically dismissed Lochgelly Albert with the 6-0 scoreline only emphasising the two league-difference between the pair.

A Dougie Cameron double, a Connor Birse hat-trick plus a Scott McComiskie counter enabled the Bluebells to cruise through to round two.

Dundonald Bluebell were the day’s top scorers in a 9-3 win over Newburgh at Moorside Park.

Scoring honours for the Super League victors went to Callum Smith, with five, with Paul Quinn, Sam Buchan, Mark Forbes and Gregg Meikle also all on target.

Kennoway Star Hearts deservedly ended Jeanfield Swifts’ interest in the competition with a 3-0 win, their first of the season.

Captain Craig Johnstone’s goal was the difference at the break, with Liam Craig and Josh Binnington finding the net in the second half.

Haddington hit Kinnoull for six at Millfield.

The depleted Tulloch Parkers only trailed to a Chris Inglis goal at the break, but goals from Lewis Temple, Inglis again, Scott Moffat, Scott Wright and Gavin Brown brought up the half-dozen.

Glenrothes gave themselves an insurmountable uphill battle at Camelon before bowing out 4-2.

After a bright beginning they found themselves two behind and down to 10 men after central defender Gary Pearson’s dismissal for a last-man offence. However, the introduction of Lee Celentano – only signed on the morning of the match from Oakley – sparked a comeback, but not before they lost a third goal.

Celentano was involved in the build up for Jamie Gay to pull one back and Gavin Moffat reduced the leeway further.

However, as the Glens threw caution to the wind, the Super League side snatched a fourth late on.

For the second week running, St Andrews were beaten at home by Musselburgh, the Lothian side running out 5-1 winners this time.

Trailing to a Jed Davie goal at the break, Scott Orrock got Saints back in the game with an equaliser early in the second half, only for Craig Morrison’s men to concede four goals in a 20minute spell, with Declan O’Kane, Davie again, Mathu King and Conor Thomson doing the damage.

Thornton Hibs also had to admit defeat to a fellow Premier League side, though in their case it was only on penalties at Whitburn.

Making their exit all the more frustrating was that a goal from Garry Thomson and a Shaun Keatings penalty had them 2-0 up at half-time.

Whitburn were vastly improved in the second half and levelled thanks to goals from Jack Hamilton and Gary Brass before prevailing 5-4 in the shoot-out.

Luncarty were under-strength but still cruised past South League visitors Stoneyburn, scoring four without reply.

Player/boss Jon Kelly hit their opener after 22 minutes with Bally Whytock and a Kieran Donald double adding to the tally after the break.

Stuart Banks was the main man as Coupar Angus posted their first victory of the season, a 3-1 win at Rosyth.

He scored after 30 seconds and went on to complete his hat-trick after Stan Chitmere had cancelled out that opener.

Two late goals ended Scone Thistle’s hopes of advancing as it finished 4-2 to Blackburn United at Farquharson Park.

Honours were even at the break after Martin Strachan cancelled out the Premier League side’s opener.

A couple of minutes after the restart Ben Moffat put the hosts ahead, but a Sean Whitworth own goal levelled matters on 71 minutes.

From then on the visitors dominated and were rewarded by goals after 89 minutes and three minutes into stoppage time.

Blairgowrie won’t recall their first meeting with Harthill Royal with any relish, surprisingly losing 2-1 at home to the South League side.

Finding themselves two down after 20 minutes, the Berrypickers’ only response was a Gordon Norrie goal in the last quarter.

Crossgates Primrose easily accounted for Forfar Albion with a 7-1 victory at Guthrie Park.

The Humbug scorers were Jamie McNeish, Dale Allan, Mark Wilkie, Mark McKenzie, Dale Coulter, with two, and Andy McDonald.

After an even first half, Lochore Welfare went on to score seven against Kirkcaldy YM at Crosshill, conceding two.

Logan Donaldson and Joe Kinnon-month bagged braces with James Adam, Ethan Anderson and an own goal completing the Welfare tally. Nathan Reaney and Stephen Kuczara were YM scorers.
