Merchiston is a leader in boys’ education in the UK

-

Merchiston is the only boys’ independent boarding school in Scotland, offers the English curriculum, and has a global, outward-looking dimension. The school takes pride in specializing in the education of boys and preparing them for the world, developing aspirational, and sensitive gentlemen.

“Everything we do, whether it is inside or outside the classroom, is defined by our intimate knowledge and experience of educating boys. We may be unique as a boys’ independent boarding school in Scotland, but our results and continuing high school roll prove that what we do works.” says Andrew Hunter, Headmaster

With an ethos based on traditional values, Merchiston encourages selfreliance and independence, as well as respect for and tolerance of others. The main objective is to motivate pupils to try their hardest and to strive to achieve the highest levels possible in all areas — firstly academic, then cultural, sporting, leadership, and simply living together as part of a community.

Another aspect of the boys-only philosophy is that time is regularly set aside to meet girls from Merchiston’s sister schools. This allows the boys to focus on study in school time, but also to have plenty of opportunities to socialize and make friends.
