Outdoor learning vital to experience of Lathallan’s pupils

-

Lathallan School, less than an hour from Dundee, is located on Aberdeenshire coastline, is surrounded by woodland and educates its pupils in and around a baronial castle.

The environment is an essential part in the educational development of Lathallan’s young people with outdoor learning embedded from nursery to Senior 6 in every subject to support learning, to support wellbeing and to support children having fun.

The vision Lathallan has for its pupils is that each one achieves their full potential.

As a small school by design, with class sizes averaging 12, they believe that they do this consistently.

Juniors benefit from individual subject specialists and even have their own lab in the new science centre while seniors consistently achieve more academically, gaining entry to universities across the country.

The confidence, respect and modesty pupils exemplify comes from taking the opportunities that are available to them as well as their own endeavours.

The pipe band played in the Tartan Day Parade in New York and was live on US TV, the school’s annual voluntary trip to South Africa saw more work at Vuyani Safehaven and the expedition to Tanzania saw the entire group – the youngest in Senior 1 – climb and summit Little Meru, Meru and Kilimanjaro, a unique achievement.

Similarly outstanding is Lathallan’s record with the Duke of Edinburgh Awards scheme, with pupils again having the best participation and completion rate in Scotland.

Sporting success is evident in many different disciplines with 20% of the senior school representing their country or region. In music more than half of pupils take additional peripatetic lessons and a further 20% follow LAMDA (drama) lessons. Pupils are involved in all aspects of school life and with the ongoing development of the school farm, they will have green fingers as well.

Lathallan offers education for children from nursery age to 18 years. There is boarding in the castle available for seniors on a full-time, weekly or flexi basis.

Scholarships are offered at S1 and S5 in January and financial assistance applications are accepted from J1-S6 throughout the year.
