Politicians finish in top three

-

Local politicians Willie Rennie MSP and Councillor Brian Thomson were among the top three finishers at a fun run held in St Andrews.

The pair were runners-up in Mr G’s MND 5km Fun Run, which was held at St Andrews University Playing Fields.

The winner was Nick Brew from Falkland Trail Runners, with a time of 18 minutes 33 seconds.

He was chased all the way by Carnegie Harriers runner Mr Rennie, who was 32 seconds behind.

Mr Thomson, of Fife Athletic Club, narrowly missed out on second place with a time of 19 minutes and 11 seconds.

A total of 243 runners put their best foot forward around the 5km course for the event, which is in its third year.

The run was organised by Madras College pupil Brynja Duthie, who launched a campaign in support of popular teacher Donald Grewar, who was diagnosed with motor neurone disease in 2014.

The money raised will help support Mr Grewar’s care and also research into MND by Dr Gareth Miles and his team at St Andrews University.

Carnegie Harrier Jo Murphy was the first woman over the line in 20 minutes and 2 seconds, followed by 13-year old Madras pupil Skye Carver and Jennifer Massie of Dundee Road Runners.

Guillem Penacchio Torres led home a procession of Fife AC juniors in the associated 1km race.
