Fresh-faced university arrivals are being welcomed to Dundee with a series of informational and social events.

This year’s intake of undergraduate and postgraduate students to Dundee University attended a welcome ceremony in the Caird Hall yesterday, where they heard from principal and vice-chancellor Professor Sir Pete Downes.

The city centre ceremony is seen as a book-end of the academic year and university life, complemented by the end-of-year graduation celebrations held in June.

Today, students have the opportunity to purchase new text books for the academic year at a pop-up book store on campus.

A disability services open day is running throughout today, offering information for all new and returning students about the facilities for disabled students on offer.

Students will also be encouraged to register with GP and dental services throughout the welcome week, with staff from a number of practices on hand in the chaplaincy building until Friday evening.

Tours of the city are being held throughout the week by a clutch of university societies.

As far as socialising is concerned, a host of evening activities have been arranged at the student union, with a number of famous faces from music and entertainment scheduled to appear.

Singing X Factor twins Jedward will greet the new arrivals on Friday evening, while Love Island contestant Marcel Somerville will make an appearance tomorrow night.

Hundreds of students have also arrived at Abertay University, who were treated to a similar number of welcoming events.

Abertay Students’ Association hosted sessions including a mad hatter’s tea party and a Scottish welcome for international students.
