Fife duo play part in victory for Scotland
Scotland’s junior bowlers splashed their way to glory in damp Mid Wales yesterday, when Bowls Scotland president Eddie Nicholson’s U25 team achieved the sport’s version of rugby’s Triple Crown, beating England, Wales and Ireland.
BS president Nicholson, a Geordie who lives in Bridge of Earn, said: “That’s a fantastic end to the season for me.
“The boys were fantastic, and fully deserved their success.”
The triumphant Scottish team in Llandrindod Wells included Cupar ace Alastair Nimmo and Crossgates (Dunfermline) star Dean Jones.
They both played their part in what was, based on recent results, a shock victory.
Fully six years have passed since Scotland last won this title and, for the past two years, they have finished a disappointing third in the pecking order.
Boosted by their opening 128-96 win over defending champions England, they edged home 122-120 against Wales.
Apart from a brief spell they were always in control against Ireland in the titledecider, winning 116-110.
Nimmo played lead on the rink skipped by Craigentinny’s Daniel Gormley, who won two out of three games, and chalked up a highly influential 28-10 win over Ireland.
Jones played third to Connor Milne, who also won two out of three.
