Numbers prove short of buyers’ requiremen­ts

Caledonian Marts Ltd on Thursday sold 172 cattle comprising 94 bullocks, heifers and young bulls, 78 cast cows and bulls.

A plainer show of cattle to that of last week would be no cheaper, however numbers forward proved short of buyers’ requiremen­ts. Bullocks averaged 216p. Heifers averaged 222p. Young bulls averaged 189p.

Black and white bulls averaged 130p.

Black and white bullocks averaged 165p. Beef cows averaged 135p. Dairy cows averaged 101p (a poor show for quality). Cast bulls averaged 137p. Bullocks sold to 260p for a Limousin from T& E Tod, Nether Longford, West Calder to WW Wales Ltd, Kilmarnock, and to £1,762 for a Simmental from C Smith, South Flanders, Kippen to Malcolm Allan & Sons.

Heifers to 258p for a Limousin from W Dandie & Sons, Learielaw, Broxburn to T Johnston, Butcher, Falkirk, and to £1,656 for the same animal.

Bulls sold to 218p for a Limousin from G Brown, Millmoor, Lanark to WW Wales Ltd, and to £1,675 for a Limousin from W Dick & Sons, Mains of Throsk, Stirling. Beef cows averaged 135p selling to 196p for an outstandin­g Limousin from W Dandie & Sons, Learielaw, Broxburn, and to £1,450 for the same beast.

Cast bulls averaged 137p selling to 146.5p for a Limousin from D Tod, Blackhill, West Calder, and to £1,460 for the same beast.

Black and white cows averaged 101p selling to 128.5p from I Brocket, Park O’ Barnaigh, Kilbarchan, and to £1,000 from M Coffey, Ramoan, Glenboig.
