Mr Asquith opened an official Air Service Exhibition in aid of various war charities at Leeds Town Hall yesterday. He described the exhibition as being one of absorbing interest, which enabled them to trace, little by little, the steps, often slow and stumbling, by which man was achieving the conquest of the air. The Zeppelin, except perhaps for scouting purposes, was a costly failure, he said, but the captive balloon was an invaluable adjunct of any considerab­le fighting force.

50 years ago

Wives of the miners of Michael Colliery, East Wemyss, gave vent to their feelings at a mass meeting in Buckhaven, attended by MPs, local authority representa­tives and Miners’ Union officials. There were about 200 women present. Instances were quoted of the the hardship faced by families whose breadwinne­rs had moved to lower paid jobs or had the prospect of the dole just around the corner. The women say they want swifter action in dealing with employment problems.

Golfers at the Caird Park course in Dundee were confronted with a new hazard this weekend. A burntout Ford Escort was discovered on the first hole, right in the middle of the fairway. The vehicle had been reported stolen from Baxter Park Terrace. The Escort was found in the early hours of the morning by the local beat policeman. It remained there throughout the day, providing a new man-made obstacle for members. The owner was responsibl­e for moving the car said the police.

Sam Allardyce’s reign as England manager ended after just 67 days in the post, having taken charge of just one game. The former Bolton, West Ham United and Sunderland boss’s £3 million a year, contract was terminated by mutual agreement with the Football Associatio­n after a newspaper investigat­ion into corruption. Allardyce was covertly filmed making a variety of indiscreet and controvers­ial comments to undercover reporters posing as businessme­n.
