Devils prove too hot for Stars

Dundee: Pacha’s men caught cold as unbeaten run is ended by Cardiff

Dundee Stars coach Omar Pacha is determined to make Dundee Ice Arena a difficult place to play.

And he was keen to extend the club’s unbeaten early-season run despite being hit by two key injuries and the Stars facing the defending Elite League champions.

The unbeaten run came to an abrupt end last night at the hands of Cardiff Devils, much to the disappointment of most of the 700 fans in the arena.

Devils arrived on the back of a crushing 6-1 weekend home defeat by shock troops Manchester Storm, but they bounced back to claim an important away victory and shutout.

They stamped their authority on the game early despite the 10-hour trip from Wales, with Dundee caught cold in just three minutes when a familiar face did the damage.

Former Stars player Justin Faryna slotted home with Layne Ulmer and Mark Richardson assisting.

Matthew Myers struck the second on a power play after work by Sean Bentivoglio and Jake Morissette. Then Patrick Asselin made it 3-0 six minutes later through Joey Martin

The sides blanked the middle session but it got worse for the home side after 52 minutes when Cardiff collected their fourth goal.

Ulmer turned from provider to scorer after being set up by Drew Paris.

Making matters worse was Dundee’s failure to take any of their power play opportunities but Cardiff claimed one of four.

Canadian-born defenceman Riley Stadel was then handed a 10-minute misconduct penalty after 53 minutes

Meanwhile Stars have announced the signing of Brian Hart.

Hart – whose brother is former Star Kevin – joins the club from the Kalamazoo Wings where he iced for half of last season, with the remainder being spent in the AHL with Syracuse Crunch.

The signing has been made in the wake of the long-term injury to Chris Lawrence.

Stars head coach Omar Pacha said: “It’s great to have Brian on board with us.

“Losing Chris was a big blow. We felt we needed to get a player that can provide offence and that can also play physical. Brian was the perfect option.

“He has great experience, even for a younger player. I think his move will not only help the team but be a great first step for him in Europe. I would also like to mention the great help from Kevin. He told him all about the club and was a big reason why we got Brian”.
