Several important matters affecting the future welfare of disabled sailors and soldiers were discussed by the Central Scottish Joint Disablement Committee, which met in Dundee under the chairmanship of Mr William Berry of Tayfield. In regard to a proposal to establish a training centre in Dunfermline for discharged disabled men. Mr Paton pointed out that no reference had been made to the Technical College in Dunfermline which could provide some help to them.

Some drinks shares lost more on the London Stock Exchange yesterday. The dip started on Monday on the introduction of breath tests for drivers. Allied and Guinness closed 3d down, Bass 6d, Watney 7½d, Courage 1s and Vaux 1s 6d. Teachers ended with a 2s loss on the day. A leading brewery firm is introducing new ideas into its public-houses to meet any possible drop in business. A spokesman for Scottish & Newcastle Breweries said: “We are going to offer coffees and teas at the bar.”

A call for the closure of the west coast sandeel fishery because of the damage it does to sea trout fishing in north-west Scotland has been made by the Scottish committee of the Salmon and Trout Association. A report identifying the link between the abundance of small sandeels in The Minch and sea trout catches in waters such as Loch Maree was published at their annual meeting in Perth. A similar but less distinct relationship was detected for salmon.

Brechin cartie race organisers have promised the crowd-puller has not been permanently parked after taking the decision to cancel this year’s event. The sight of soapbox racers was set to grace the centre at the end of this month for community group Bravo Brechin’s Halloween in the City spectacular. The carties have been part of a success story for the burgh since 2012, regularly attracting a crowd of up to 3,000. But a plea for more racers to come forward has failed to generate sufficient numbers.
