Looking to rewrite history books with long-awaited win over Celtic

The last time Dundee beat Celtic, present Dark Blues defender Kerr Waddell was only two-years-old, which shows the scale of the task facing his side when they travel to Parkhead on Saturday.

It was on May 13 2001 that a Fabian Caballero double gave Dundee a 2-0 victory in the east end of Glasgow against a Hoops outfit that already had the title wrapped up.

The win was all the more remarkable as the visitors’ Zurab Khizanishvili was sent off in the first half.

However, since that famous victory, Dundee have played 30 matches against the Glasgow giants without winning once.

The stats certainly make for grim reading with that run including 26 Celtic victories and only four draws.

Current manager Neil McCann would no doubt point out that few of the squad he has assembled since taking over as permanent boss can be held responsible for even part of the historically-poor record.

His players did though find out just how difficult it will be to end the barren run when they played Brendan Rodgers’ side in the Betfred Cup at Dens three weeks ago and were on the wrong end of a 4-0 scoreline.

Celtic are, of course, on an incredible run of domestic dominance with their draw against Hibs at Parkhead before the international break extending their unbeaten sequence of results to 58 matches.

It has been said time after time that run has to end eventually – the bookies though are fairly certain it will not be on Saturday with odds of 19-1 on offer for a Dundee victory.

However, McCann will ensure his side have a right, good go at rewriting the history books.
