Leaders recover from setback to see off Fed

Nine-man Broughty’s excellent start peters out as Penicuik take points

- MARK JOHNSON

Despite taking a first-minute lead, Broughty Athletic’s positive start to life under Jim Finlayson came to an abrupt end at the hands of leaders Penicuik Athletic at Whitton Park.

The Fed took the lead in the first minute courtesy of a calamitous own goal from the visitors when keeper Kyle Allison misjudged a straightforward pass-back and allowed the ball to bounce over his foot and into the net.

The leaders were level six minutes later thanks to Lumbert Kateleza and then went in front on 26 minutes when Aaron Somerville scored.

Kateleza made it three on 58 minutes before things got even worse for Broughty on 68 minutes when Ryan Blair was shown a red card for a rash challenge out wide. Ten minutes later Jamie Winter received a second booking and joined Blair in the dressing room. John MacDonald put the cherry on the Penicuik cake when he made it 4-1 in stoppage time.

Forfar West End dropped to the bottom of the table as they went down 2-0 at home to Kennoway Star Hearts.

Chris Gay put the Fifers in front before Lyall Shaw made sure of the points with the second goal. The win is Kennoway’s first of the season and lifts them off the bottom, leapfrogging West End.

Calum Adamson broke Carnoustie’s hearts with a last minute winner as Hill of Beath won 2-1 at Keirs Park. Both sides were missing a number of players but served up an entertaining encounter.

Daniel Watt put the Haws in front on 57 minutes but Ryan Dignan levelled things up when he got his head to a cross from Marc Walker.

The visitors looked the more likely to hit the winner. However, with the Gowfers on the attack, Hill of Beath broke and took advantage of players being out of position, allowing Adamson to slam the ball home.

Jeanfield Swifts scored the first and last goals at home to Linlithgow Rose, unfortunately for Ross Gunnion’s men, Rose scored five in-between.

Chris Scott put Swifts in front on 21 minutes only for Tommy Coyne to level on the half hour.

Coyne then scored on 62 and 67 minutes to complete his hat-trick before Ruari Maclennan made it 4-1 on 73 and Owen Ronald scored the fifth on 81 minutes. Gary Fergus scored a second for Jeanfield with five minutes remaining.

Struggling Bo’ness United were surprise winners against high-flying Lochee United at Thomson Park.

Stuart Hunter, who had re-signed for Bo’ness during the week, put his side in front on 23 minutes.

Dougie Cameron equalised from the spot on 73 minutes and then Bo’ness had manager Alan McGonigal sent off minutes later.

However, this appeared to spur on his side and Ryan Miller scored on 81 minutes and then again with two minutes remaining to give Bo’ness the points.
