Stars hit for five as Steelers prove too strong

Ice hockey: Fife hit five against rivals Braehead – but more agony for Stars

- Nigel duncan

Chase Schaber netted a brace as Fife Flyers thrashed Braehead Clan 5-1 last night to complete an Elite League double over the Glasgow side.

Schaber opened the scoring after three minutes but Tyler Shattock levelled unassisted just over five minutes later.

Evan Bloodoff restored Fife’s advantage less than three minutes after that and they never looked back.

Schaber’s second arrived six seconds from the end of the second session and two goals inside the first nine minutes of the final period sealed the win.

Carlo Finucci scored after 42 minutes and James Isaacs completed the scoring six minutes later.

On Saturday Jonathan Ferland claimed a double as Flyers skidded to a 5-0 defeat at Belfast Giants.

His goals came inside three first-period minutes.

The sides blanked the middle session but two goals in the final three minutes ended the contest.

Brendan Connolly opened the scoring with Ferland claiming the second and the same player was on the spot soon after for the third.

Sebastien Sylvestre slotted the fourth and Blair Riley wrapped up the goals with 36 seconds remaining.

Dundee Stars were 3-0 down after 29 minutes in their home clash with Sheffield Steelers last night.

However, goals from Joey de Concilys and home debutant Brian Hart gave Omar Pacha’s men hope that they could trouble the defending league champions.

Steelers responded well though and goals from Robert Dowd after 50 minutes and Liam Kirk three minutes later took the points to Yorkshire.

Stars’ poor run of form had continued 24 hours earlier as they let slip a 3-0 firstperiod lead to go down 4-3 after penalty shots at league pace-setters Manchester Storm.

Ciaran Long netted the game-winning penalty shot after misses from Stars players Riley Stadel, Patrick Lee and Marc-Olivier Mimar.

Dane Byers, Luke Moffat and Shane Bakker netted last night as Manchester Storm beat Edinburgh Capitals 3-1 at Murrayfield.

Dylan Anderson scored for the home side to level at 1-1 but Moffat and Bakker secured the points, with the crucial strike coming four minutes from the end.
